about

'in lockdown' follows experiences of the pandemic for an expanded hymn collective.

From improvised duets to composed fragments used as an instigation for improvised sections, the album also includes a rendition of 'idumea' recorded by George and Chris for the 'Songs for Christmas' event of Sufjan Stevens covers, and a starting point for an anti-slavery project that will continue with an EP of its own.

Bass clarinet and flugelhorn entangle, whilst prepared piano and percussion clatters, and atmospheric trumpet loops. Finally, the album finds itself at Anteros art gallery in Norwich for the only live (in person) duo, a final consequences version by Chris and Natural Causes head honcho Hugh Nankivell. Song-like chords accompany breathy trumpet in an open-ended composition.

An alternative hymn arrangement for unprecedented circumstances unfolds in a game of consequences...

hymn is a group from Norwich, comprising a trio with electronics of Chris Dowding, George McKay and David Ross.

They play with guests and in improvised configurations, including violinist Sylvia Hallett and vinyl improviser Graham Dunning.

They play spacious improvisations informed by spare composed material, "with aching melodies emerging from a gnarly scratchy undertow" (John Sharpe).
